CHAPTER FIFTEEN
âYOUâRE A WEEK late,â said Colonel Rabi.
Odion eyed him, nonplussed. âI put in a request for some personal time.â
âI know exactly where you went,â said the colonel. âDo you feel better, having dispatched him?â
Odion just stared at him.
âI do,â said the colonel. âIâm pleased you did. Disgusting thing, really. It shook me. I was so shaken that I broke my own rules and told her I thought she was brilliant. I canât say it hurt her, however. You see what sheâs done. Two weeks now, and sheâs transformed the skirmishes. You should watch one. Itâs like nothing youâve seen. She hasnât lost a single one since sheâs taken over the bask. Just like you.â
âYes, but I was a year older than she was when you made me a capitan cadet, and I hadnât just been sexually assaulted.â
âOh, nothing happened,â said the colonel. âElm saysââ
âIf it was nothing, I wouldnât have killed him,â said Odion.
The colonel hesitated, and then gave him a sharp nod. âYouâre right, of course. Something happened, regardless of whether or not it was actual intercourse.â
Odion flinched. He often wanted to hurt this man, but right now, it felt overwhelming. âYou didnât tell me. I stayed on mission, and you didnât send wordââ
âI think youâre so used to getting special treatment you resent it when youâre treated like everyone else, even though youâre always whining about how much you hate special treatment.â
Odion could barely breathe. He imagined driving his fist square into the middle of the colonelâs face. âShe was alone.â
âThatâs by design,â said the colonel.
Odion shook his head.
âYou havenât gone to her either,â said the colonel.
Odion grimaced.
âBecause you donât know what to say,â said the colonel. âI also note you didnât visit any whorehouses, at least none which I have asked to send me word of such a thing. Of course, whores canât teach you that sort of thing, I suppose. Anyway, she doesnât need you coddling her. You can see what sheâs done without you here.â
âIâm going to her,â said Odion. âAs soon as you dismiss me, that is.â
âAre you truly?â The colonel was mocking him.
Odion nodded, though he was terrified at the thought of it. He didnât know what to say to her. He didnât know how to be around her. And his guilt was a weight that settled over him like a heavy mantle.
âDonât make her soft, Odion. She needs to believe sheâs on her own. Donât tell her you killed him, for instance.â
âI wasnât going to,â he said. âI didnât do that for her.â He looked away. âI mean, I donât know why I did it. Just⦠it was better, in the end, for everyone.â And it felt good.
The colonel wagged a finger in his face. âDo not tell her.â
