CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“YOU’RE A WEEK late,” said Colonel Rabi.

Odion eyed him, nonplussed. “I put in a request for some personal time.”

“I know exactly where you went,” said the colonel. “Do you feel better, having dispatched him?”

Odion just stared at him.

“I do,” said the colonel. “I’m pleased you did. Disgusting thing, really. It shook me. I was so shaken that I broke my own rules and told her I thought she was brilliant. I can’t say it hurt her, however. You see what she’s done. Two weeks now, and she’s transformed the skirmishes. You should watch one. It’s like nothing you’ve seen. She hasn’t lost a single one since she’s taken over the bask. Just like you.”

“Yes, but I was a year older than she was when you made me a capitan cadet, and I hadn’t just been sexually assaulted.”

“Oh, nothing happened,” said the colonel. “Elm says—”

“If it was nothing, I wouldn’t have killed him,” said Odion.

The colonel hesitated, and then gave him a sharp nod. “You’re right, of course. Something happened, regardless of whether or not it was actual intercourse.”

Odion flinched. He often wanted to hurt this man, but right now, it felt overwhelming. “You didn’t tell me. I stayed on mission, and you didn’t send word—”

“I think you’re so used to getting special treatment you resent it when you’re treated like everyone else, even though you’re always whining about how much you hate special treatment.”

Odion could barely breathe. He imagined driving his fist square into the middle of the colonel’s face. “She was alone.”

“That’s by design,” said the colonel.

Odion shook his head.

“You haven’t gone to her either,” said the colonel.

Odion grimaced.

“Because you don’t know what to say,” said the colonel. “I also note you didn’t visit any whorehouses, at least none which I have asked to send me word of such a thing. Of course, whores can’t teach you that sort of thing, I suppose. Anyway, she doesn’t need you coddling her. You can see what she’s done without you here.”

“I’m going to her,” said Odion. “As soon as you dismiss me, that is.”

“Are you truly?” The colonel was mocking him.

Odion nodded, though he was terrified at the thought of it. He didn’t know what to say to her. He didn’t know how to be around her. And his guilt was a weight that settled over him like a heavy mantle.

“Don’t make her soft, Odion. She needs to believe she’s on her own. Don’t tell her you killed him, for instance.”

“I wasn’t going to,” he said. “I didn’t do that for her.” He looked away. “I mean, I don’t know why I did it. Just… it was better, in the end, for everyone.” And it felt good.

The colonel wagged a finger in his face. “Do not tell her.”
